First, congratulations. If you're reading this, you might be in the dreamy, half-overwhelmed phase of planning a wedding — or you've already walked into Planterra Conservatory in West Bloomfield and felt what we felt the first time we stepped inside. Either way, we're so happy you're here.
We're the team at Jaymes Media, and we film weddings for a living. We've shot in ballrooms, barns, backyards, and beaches. But Planterra? Planterra is the one we can't stop thinking about. It's the venue we quietly hope couples will pick when they ask us for a recommendation. We're not a neutral party anymore — we love this place, and we think you will too.
A Room That Does Half the Work for You
There's a particular feeling of walking into a greenhouse and realizing you forgot the world outside existed. Vines climbing the beams. Trees older than most marriages. Light coming down through the glass like it's being filtered through a memory. That's Planterra.
For a couple, that means you don't have to work for your wedding to look beautiful — it just is. For us behind the camera, it means we stop thinking about logistics and start thinking about you. Every direction we point the lens, something pretty happens on its own.
"The sun had dropped to that last hour before it gives up for the day, and a beam of light landed right across the top tier — like somebody up there was paying attention."
One afternoon a while back, we were filming a bride cutting the cake. The sun had dropped to that last hour before it gives up for the day, and a beam of light landed right across the top tier — like somebody up there was paying attention. Nobody planned it. Nobody could have. We watched her see it and laugh, and her new husband squeezed her hand, and that's the frame we still send to couples when they ask us what Planterra is like. We can't really explain it in words. It keeps giving us moments like that.
The Plants Make Everyone Look Good (Really)
This is going to sound like a small thing, but it's not: the greenery at Planterra is unbelievably kind to how people look on camera. Skin glows. White dresses read as ivory and cream instead of harsh. Greens and terracottas and soft browns surround everyone — colors that have been flattering human faces since forever. Your grandma is going to look like a painting. So is your dad when he cries walking you down the aisle.
And then golden hour arrives. We've tried for years to describe what that part of the day feels like at Planterra and we usually fail. Something softens. Conversations drop a half-octave. People stop checking their phones. The light goes amber, and suddenly your wedding stops looking like an event and starts feeling like a story someone will tell for a long time.
And Then Night Comes, and It Gets Even Better
Here's what nobody warned us about the first time we shot a Planterra wedding: the night is almost better than the day. The sun goes down, the candles come up, the fire torches start throwing that warm, flickering light across the leaves, and the whole room turns into something that feels older and quieter and more romantic than you were expecting.
You'll dance in it. Your friends will cry in it. Someone's uncle will tell a story that goes on a little too long and nobody will mind, because the room is holding everyone so gently. When we edit these wedding films later — sitting in a quiet room months after the fact — we still get a little emotional watching the nighttime shots. That's the honest truth.
Why We Keep Coming Back
The beauty gets people in the door. What keeps the Planterra team in business is how seriously they take your day. One wedding a day — that's it. No rush, no turnover, no bumping into another couple's send-off as your ceremony starts. Their in-house florals, catering, rentals, planning, valet — it's all handled by people who actually care, which you feel the minute you meet them.
As vendors, we notice the things couples shouldn't have to notice. Timelines that don't fall apart. Coordinators who catch things before they become problems. Staff who treat your grandparents with patience. It makes a difference on the wedding day, and it makes a bigger difference in the film — because when nobody is stressed, everybody is present, and presence is what we're actually trying to capture.
If You're Still Deciding
Planterra isn't the cheapest venue in Michigan, and we're not going to pretend it is. But if what you want is a wedding that feels like you stepped into a different, softer version of your life for one day — and a wedding film you'll still want to watch on your tenth anniversary — we haven't found anywhere in Detroit, in Michigan, or honestly anywhere we've filmed, that does it better.
Whatever you decide, we're rooting for you. Weddings are a big, strange, wonderful thing to say yes to, and you deserve a day that feels like yours. If that day happens to unfold inside a glass conservatory with the light coming down through the leaves — call us. We'd love to help you remember it.
